My first week here in DC at The Washington Journalism Center has been such a wonderful experience and it is hard to believe that it is already over!
This weekend was extremely exciting and fun filled, but let me back up a few days...
I finally cooked my first family dinner on Thursday night. I took it pretty easy and just made tacos. They were actually decent and no one got sick most importantly. After we had dinner a bunch of us went to Union Station to try out this new cupcake bakery called Crumbs Bake Shop. They had such a wide variety of cupcakes, but unfortunately they were out of red velvet and carrot cake flavored. So I just decided to go with the normal and I got a vanilla with chocolate icing and sprinkles. Can't go wrong with that!

Friday I had quite the adventure. As I posted in my last blog I was asked by my editor to cover a story at the VA on Saturday, so I wanted to figure out where exactly the VA was so that I wouldn't have any trouble finding it Saturday morning. I was able to drag a few people with me simply due to the fact that we were going shopping afterwards. After a quick metro and bus ride we eventually found the VA, which helped put my mind at ease. We then went to Pentagon City to the humongous four story mall. Unfortunately Corrie and I only made it to the second level. Good thing we still have three months left here!
All my nerves suddenly disappeared whenever I walked into the VA on Saturday morning. There were so many veterans that were there and surprisingly many of them were willing to talk and share their stories with me. The things that some of them had experienced while serving our country were unimaginable, but also inspiring. At the end of the day I also had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Eric Shinseki. That was AMAZING to say the least. It was my first day as a "real reporter" and I was already meeting incredible public figures... I could get used to this.

Just so you're aware, the link for Crumbs Bakery Shop takes readers to the Milligan e-mail page...
